Do you know which 10 product and service categories are strictly prohibited from advertising on TikTok? What about the exceptions?
As we’ve mentioned before, TikTok is the new go-to platform for businesses looking for another high-impact touchpoint with their audience.
Our client portfolio already includes businesses that have added TikTok to their digital channel mix, and the results show that the channel works successfully – delivering good, and sometimes even outstanding, performance. However, just like other ad platforms, not everything can be advertised there. If you’re interested in or currently planning an ad campaign on the platform, you need to know that TikTok enforces a list of banned categories. Note that this list applies exclusively to paid ad content.
Why is this a must-know? Because it allows you to:
✔️ Save time and budget: Avoid wasting effort and ad spend producing creatives that will just get disapproved or flagged.
✔️ Steer clear of account penalties: Protect your ad account from restrictions or bans that could hurt your business over the long haul.
✔️ Ensure seamless ad delivery: Make sure your campaigns actually reach your target audience instead of running into policy roadblocks or getting shadowbanned—which directly impacts your bottom line.
Here is the breakdown of the product categories banned from advertising on TikTok.
The restricted list covers the following categories:
-
Adult Products and Services (18+)
Since TikTok’s user base leans heavily toward younger demographics, sexually explicit or adult-oriented products are strictly forbidden.
🔸What might be allowed? Dating apps and live-chat platforms are the main exceptions here. Your ads won’t be automatically rejected, but you will need to go through an extra layer of manual approval from the TikTok team.
-
Alcohol
TikTok does not allow ads promoting alcoholic beverages – whether that’s a specific spirit brand or non-alcoholic mixers marketed explicitly as cocktail ingredients. However, there are a few workarounds, such as ads for venues or events that serve alcohol (provided the focus isn’t strictly on the drinks themselves).
🔸What might be allowed? Corkscrews, wine glasses, and other barware accessories designed for serving or consuming alcohol.
-
Cigarettes, Tobacco, and Vapes
TikTok maintains a zero-tolerance policy for advertising tobacco products and smoking devices, regardless of whether they contain nicotine. This means that if your inventory consists of smoking accessories, or if you run venues that actively encourage smoking, your ads will get disapproved.
🔸What might be allowed? Nicotine replacement therapies and smoking cessation products, anti-tobacco public health campaigns, tobacco-flavored products (like candles or scents), as well as lighters and accessories that make no explicit mention of tobacco or smoking.
-
Financial Products and Cryptocurrencies
TikTok enforces tight restrictions on financial services and crypto to protect users from predatory scams and misleading information.
Foreign exchange, currency trading desks, and crypto exchanges are barred across the board. Financial investment advice promising “guaranteed returns,” as well as pyramid schemes and “get-rich-quick” tactics, are strictly banned.
🔸 What might be allowed? Financial products that can be advertised (provided they meet strict regulatory criteria) include credit cards, Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services, wealth management services, and personal loans
-
Animals and Animal Products
If your business involves the sale of live animals or products made from endangered species (such as ivory, genuine furs, etc.), TikTok will not approve your ads.
🔸 What might be allowed? Pet toys, leashes, grooming supplies, and general pet care accessories.
-
Gambling
TikTok strictly prohibits advertising gambling products and services due to the risk of misleading claims and addiction. Banned formats include online sports betting, bingo, fantasy sports, virtual gambling games, online casinos, and unregulated lotteries.
🔸 What might be allowed? Licensed lotteries and “Social Casino Games (with no real money involved)” can be permitted. However, both formats MUST be cleared by a dedicated TikTok Sales Representative and targeted strictly to users aged 18+. Additionally, lottery operators must be state-regulated and government-managed.
-
Political Content
TikTok enforces a blanket ban on political advertising across all of its ad formats. This covers paid ads, influencer sponsorships, and any other promotional tools on the platform.
🔸 What might be allowed? Government entities can run public information campaigns, provided the campaign is directly onboarded and managed by a TikTok Sales Representative.
You can find the remaining restricted categories in PART 2 of this article.
